The Xavier Booster Club’s Xtra Award provides Xavier parents and students an opportunity to convey their sincerest appreciation towards a Xavier mentor who has impacted their family in some way. Every spring, since 2007, the Xavier Booster Club has had the privilege of reviewing the numerous Xtra Award nominations submitted by Xavier parents and students. While only one mentor is recognized at the Senior Honors Assembly and rewarded with a $500 gift, the Booster Club is able to see firsthand how many incredible mentors surround our Xavier students. To date, the Xtra Award has been given to eighteen different past mentors! Our kids are literally surrounded by amazing mentors who demonstrate authentic leadership qualities on a consistent basis.
Of the nineteen different mentor nominations, this year’s Xtra Award winner had received a substantial number of nominations. When asked ‘How has this person positively impacted your activity?’ some of the responses follow:
This person has made the sport very enjoyable by their motivation and determination to have fun and achieve goals at the same time.
All students are welcome to play - no cuts!
Our child loves going to practice every day - no complaints!
The coach improved my work ethic and skills.
This mentor has a positive and professional attitude with not only the players but with the families, as well.
This mentor genuinely cares about both the players and the team’s coaches.
This individual coaches in a very positive manner. When the player has made a mistake, this coach has lifted them up versus knocking them down.
Prayers and blessings are rituals with the team.
This coach has had a way to motivate players to demonstrate their fullest potential on the field, out in their community, and with their faith lives.
Coach Chris Higgins is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. We realized he was a special person the day he carried our injured daughter off the field during a game, when he was coaching the opposing team. He has such a special interest in the kids, he checks in on them from time to time to see how they are doing. That is a sign of a great mentor. He formed a coaching staff who took a genuine interest in ALL the kids. He would often be seen at other sporting events supporting his soccer girls, what a role model. He asked parents to step up and help out when needed in a number of crucial roles, which helped make the program stronger. He did it the right way!
Congratulations, Coach Higgins, for being selected as Xavier High School’s 2020 Xtra Award recipient! Thank you for showing the Xavier community what it takes to be an incredible leader and mentor. For those who have seen and heard the way that you live and the way that you coach, their lives have been incredibly blessed by your example.
Thank you to all of the families who have contributed to the Booster Club through their annual membership donation. Their memberships allow the Xavier Booster Club to support our children’s athletic and fine arts activities. If you are able, please, consider making a donation to Xavier’s Booster Club each year so that we can continue to support all of the dynamic mentors in our community. Go Saints!
