Xavier High School has named Jake Johnson as its next head varsity girls soccer coach. Johnson comes to Xavier having served the past two seasons as an assistant coach for men's soccer at Coe College. Prior to coaching at Coe, Johnson coached soccer at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, serving as the head girls soccer coach from 2018-2021 and as an assistant for boys soccer from 2010-2017.
He is a 2012 graduate of Coe College, where he competed in soccer, leading the Kohawks in scoring three out of four years and earning all-conference honors as a team captain. Additionally, Johnson played professional soccer for the Cedar Rapids Rampage (2017-2019) and the Iowa Raptors (2022).
"Coach Johnson brings a wealth of experience, passion for soccer, and the ability to connect to his players that will serve him well in building upon Xavier's history of success," states Matt Svare, Xavier High School Activities Director. "We are thrilled to have him as the next leader of our Girls Soccer program!"
Johnson succeeds Chris Higgins who moved on from Xavier to pursue a soccer coaching opportunity at North Dakota State University following the 2022 high school soccer season.
Johnson will be taking over a program at Xavier that has been to the state tournament 18 times over the course of the 25 years Xavier has been open. During that time, the Saints have amassed 10 state championships.
