Xavier High School has named Amy Weiland as its next varsity volleyball head coach. Weiland has served as Xavier's head sophomore volleyball coach over the past two seasons, where she led the Saints to a combined record of 34-2 and back-to-back Mississippi Valley Conference division championships. She also served as an assistant coach for Xavier's varsity volleyball team in 2021 in which the Saints reached the state quarterfinal round and 2022 in which the Saints won the Class 4A state championship.
Beyond coaching volleyball at the high school level, Weiland has also served as a successful head coach at the club volleyball level.
"Amy has already made an immense impact on our program, coaching at the sophomore level," states XHS Activities Director, Matt Svare. "Her vision for our volleyball program, coupled with her motivational leadership style and advanced communication skills, will be invaluable in helping us achieve our goals at Xavier. I am confident that with her dedication, attention to detail, and passion for the sport, we will continue to thrive as an elite volleyball program."
Weiland will be taking over a program that has achieved significant and consistent success under outgoing head coach, Austin Filer, who stepped away to focus on serving as the head coach of the men's volleyball team at Mount Mercy University following the 2022 season. Xavier Volleyball has reached the state tournament in each of the past seven seasons and earned two state championships during that stretch (2020, 2022).
Amy (Olberding) Weiland is a 2016 graduate of Xavier High School, where she played libero for the Saints during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. She went on to earn her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University in 2020.
