“The booster club is an integral part of the successful activities programs at Xavier. Without the help of the booster club, we would not be able to have one of the best athletics programs in the state of Iowa,” Freeman said.
Freeman has been involved and a part of the Xavier community before becoming the new varsity head coach. He graduated from Xavier in 2001 and was a member of the basketball team. He also has a long history of coaching basketball at the collegiate level.
Freeman hopes to build relationships with the student athletes in the program, which include seniors who look back on their time spent in the program. Senior Jacob Beckmann reflected on his past four years in the program.
“It feels unreal. I remember basketball freshman year like it was yesterday,” Beckmann said.
Beckmann also echoed Freeman’s gratitude toward the Booster Club.
“It’s always good to have new equipment and uniforms, and we’re really thankful for that,” Beckmann said.
In the past, varsity boys basketball have won back-to-back state championships in 2016 and 2017. The team hopes to take the lessons and practices from the program’s past and apply them to the future.
One of those traditions is representing Xavier at a high standard in numerous places.
“Our goal is to have a program that does things the right way in the classroom, in the community and on the basketball court. We want to make sure we are great representatives of the Xavier High School mission,” Freeman said.
Both Freeman and Beckmann encourage the Xavier community to come out and support the basketball program. The boys’ game schedule can be found here
