Congratulations to Xavier Football head coach, Duane Schulte (L80) on being named the 2023 head coach for the North Team in the 2023 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star Classic. Having served as an assistant coach for the Shrine Bowl (2002), this will mark the first time Schulte has served as a head coach for this event.
Schulte began his career in coaching as a sophomore assistant as a student teacher at Marshalltown High School in 1984. He then moved on to Davenport Assumption High School where he served as a varsity and sophomore assistant from 1986-1987 and then again in 1991. Schulte was named the head football coach Cedar Rapids LaSalle High School, where he served from 1994-1997 prior to the merging of Regis and LaSalle High Schools in 1998 to form Xavier High School where he has been head coach ever since.
During his time at LaSalle and Xavier, Schulte has taken 21 teams to the state playoffs, earned four state titles in 2006 (Class 4A), 2017 (3A), 2018 (3A), and 2022 (4A). He is the first coach to win both a 4A and a 3A state title. His teams have won a total of 14 district/conference titles.
The Shrine Bowl will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 4:00 PM at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Three 2023 Xavier High School graduates are on the roster for the North Team: Jevin Rexroth (X23), Josef Lemker (X23), and Thomas Sundell (X23).
The Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star Classic game is an annual football game played each July featuring 92 of the best football players in the State of Iowa. To date, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised nearly $3.0M for Shriners’ Children.
