Staff Update: Familiar Faces in New Roles for 2022-2023

We are excited to announce that these two 'xceptional individuals, familiar to many in our school community, will be taking on new roles here at Xavier for the 2022-2023 school year. Mr. Mike Winker returns to Xavier to serve as our new Assistant Activities Director and longtime Xavier teacher/coach, Mr. Russ Camacho, will split his time between teaching and serving as our new Building Facilitator. 

The new positions of Assistant Activities Director and Building Facilitator will result in an influx of needed support in key areas for our staff. With Mr. Winker and Mr. Camacho serving in their new capacities, Xavier will be properly resourced to continue its mission and achieve our vision as a school.

Introducing Mr. Russ Camacho, New Building Facilitator 
Longtime XHS science teacher and coach, Mr. Camacho, will be splitting his time between his teaching duties and serving as our new Building Facilitator. Mr. Camacho has been a part of our faculty for more than 20 years and has also served as a coach in various activities over that time. He is currently the head coach for our bowling program and serves as the head coach for boys track. In his new role, he will primarily be responsible for handling student discipline, attendance, school safety in addition to non-curricular supervision.

Welcome (BACK), Mr. Mike Winker, New Assistant Activities Director!
Mr. Winker re-joins the Xavier staff as our new Assistant Activities Director. In this position, he will assist with the management of the multitude of activities-based events and serve as an important resource to our new activities director, Mr. Matt Svare.

Mr. Winker served as Xavier's first activities director from 1998-2016 (and at Regis High School from 1993-1998 prior to that). He is currently a lecturer in the Sport and Recreation Management program at the University of Iowa and an advisor for the Interscholastic AD Certification program. He will continue to serve in these capacities as well. 

Mr. Winker was awarded the IHSADA Northeast Iowa District “Athletic Director of the Year,” in 2009, and the IHSSA “Fine Arts Administrator of the Year” award in 2016. In 2021, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame. Mr. Winker (R83) also is a member of the LaSalle-Regis-Xavier Alumni Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in building our activities program into one of the most successful programs in the state, amassing 30 team state titles during his tenure with more than 94 percent student participation year-in and year-out.
