Xavier Catholic School Families,
We know this last week has brought unexpected changes to our school schedule due to the weather. We greatly appreciate your flexibility, understanding, and partnership as we aim to ensure conditions are safe for students and staff for school to be in session.
We're sure some of you have been wondering about the rationale that goes into weather related changes. Very few weather days are alike and each day is reviewed according to the conditions on that day (temperature, wind chill, precipitation, road conditions, etc). Xavier Catholic Schools makes decisions based on our schools and student population. A determining factor with cold weather is Wind Chill Advisories vs. Wind Chill Warnings. Wind Chill Warnings are for when it feels like temperatures of -30°F or lower and Wind Chill Advisories are for when it feels like temperatures of -20° to -29°F.
Xavier Catholic School’s practice going forward will be to utilize normal, on-time school starts for Wind Chill Advisories, but be canceled for Wind Chill Warnings. However, any other affecting factor may change this methodology, for example a Wind Chill Advisory with poor road conditions may lead to a delay or even a cancellation.
Due to the Wind Chill Warning in place until noon on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, all classes at Xavier Catholic Schools will be canceled for tomorrow. We realize that one variation that we will likely have from other school districts is on cold days. We almost always follow what the area schools do in terms of snow, ice, blowing snow, etc.
UPDATE: High School Activities: Xavier HS activities will be allowed to be held after 2:00 PM. All activities for Tuesday afternoon/evening will be held as scheduled.
We understand the frustration that comes with this whole process; changing schedules puts a huge burden on everyone and we don't take those decisions lightly. We hope the rationale provided helps put some clarity on this issue. Stay Warm!
Sincerely,
