Speech has been a part of our school since it opened. Coach Scott Davidson has been with us for 20 years. The Xavier Speech Team has earned more than 100 All-State nominations.  

Xavier Speech is an extra-curricular activity for students in grades 9-12. There are two seasons for our team. They are Large Group and Individuals. A student may participate in one or both of the seasons.

Large Group is cast using auditions. Auditions for Large Group are typically held in November following the Fall Musical. We will attempt to cast every student who auditions for our team, so auditions are more for placement in a category than for a spot on the team. Rehearsals are by category and run Monday through Friday, with most groups rehearsing twice per week for approximately 45 minutes at a time. Requirements for speech are travel during competition season and time commitment for rehearsals.

Large Group and Individual Speech teams attend three contests each. Any speech that receives a division 1 rating at the District contest moves on to perform at the State contest. A division 1 rating at State, coupled with a recommendation by the judges, can lead to an All-State nomination.
